Grand Gulch Mine Airstrip Clean Up
Hosted by the Utah Backcountry Pilots Association
Saturday, February 3 at 9 AM - 12 PM
Our UBCP and RAF friends in the St. George area have invited all back country pilots to a "Runway Clean Up Day" at the Grand Gulch Mine Landing Strip on Saturday, Feb. 3. The landing strip is reported to be in good condition and will not need much other than some weed removal and sprucing up the parking area.
Grand Gulch is the site of a small but prolific and historic over 100-year old copper mine near the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The landing strip is a short walk from the old mine. Many of the historic buildings still stand and there are even two abandoned "Euclid" dump trucks that were used at the mine. It is reported that these trucks were used in the construction of the Hoover Dam and were then sold to the mine owners.
The landing strip is located at N 36° 19.30" W 113° 47.16" at about 4500' MSL. It is suitable for most higher performance airplanes. Pilots not familiar with the landing strip might want to consider a check out by an experienced instructor. CTAF is 122.9.
